Our story
A personal journey, a larger ambition
Speshul began with our founder, Chhavi, and her experience as a parent.
Finding educators, therapists, and other professionals often came down to circumstances like a school recommendation, another parent, a WhatsApp group, or knowing someone who knew someone.
Conversations with other parents and professionals showed her how much knowledge and expertise existed within this community, and how difficult it could be to discover beyond the circle one already had.
There had to be a better way to connect families and the professionals they need.
That idea became Speshul: a place where families can discover a wider world of support, and relevant professionals can be found.
What began with Chhavi’s experience is now a larger ambition to build a more connected community around children and the people who support them.
Why “Speshul”?
Spesh-ul.
Say it out loud, and this spelling feels obvious. It’s a simple, natural way for a child to spell the word phonetically. It’s also how many of us would spell special if we hadn’t learned the “right” way. Our version of ‘right’ often comes from what we have been taught. What once seemed like the only way for something can simply become one of many.
What it reflects
That intuition gave us our name, and something else to think about. Isn’t parenthood, in many ways, driven by intuition? Every child brings their own thinking, strengths, difficulties, interests, emotions, and ways of experiencing the world. With every child, there is always more to discover, learn, and shape as they grow.
A logo with many meanings
That sense of possibility found its way into our logo too. Some see a child being supported by a parent and a teacher. Others see an embrace. Some see a child throwing their arms up in celebration. We like that it can be all three.
