The Support Journey

As your child’s world grows

New interests, challenges and possibilities come into view, and different kinds of knowledge and experience become useful.

Here is a broad view of the stages you and your child may move through, and the people who can support you at each one, in a journey that will take its own Speshul shape.

Recognition

Noticing early signs and beginning to look more closely

You may notice something yourself, or a teacher or someone close to your child may point it out.

Reading or writing might be hard, steady handwriting may be unusually difficult, spoken instructions may not work, certain sounds or textures may cause deep discomfort, or social situations may seem hard to navigate.

This stage is about noticing what is happening for your child and deciding whether you want to explore it further.

2

Assessment

Understanding your child’s strengths, challenges, and learning profile

When you want to look more closely, the right professional can bring experience that’s difficult to have as a parent seeing this for the first time.

Psychologists, learning assessors, developmental specialists and other professionals understand different aspects of learning and development, and use conversations, observation, and activities to build a more complete picture of your child.

An assessment can connect things you’ve noticed, identify the support needs, give you clearer language for your child’s strengths and difficulties, and help point towards targeted support.

3

Intervention and Support

Finding support for learning, development, and everyday life

This is often where a few more people enter your child’s world.

A special educator, speech or occupational therapist, behaviour therapist, counsellor, remedial educator, or coach can each bring a different body of knowledge and experience. Their work touches on learning, communication, confidence, behaviour, movement, sensory needs, and everyday skills.

There’s a wide range of expertise out there, including people and approaches you may never encounter through your immediate network. Speshul brings more of this within reach, so you have a wider circle to explore as you find what works for your child.

4

School and Learning

Supporting learning, participation and social-emotional growth at school

School is a large part of your child’s world: where they learn, make friends, discover interests, take on challenges, and find their place among others. It’s also often built around certain expectations of how children behave, participate and learn, which may not always work for your child.

Your child may need accommodations or other provisions. It helps to have informed and invested voices alongside yours. Special educators, remedial educators, and coaches can work alongside what happens in class. Therapists and counsellors who have worked with children with similar needs, and in schools like your child’s, can bring practical experience of all that is possible and how the pieces fit together.

5

Transitions

Building independence, life skills, and a sense of what comes next

As your child gets older, the focus begins to widen beyond school. Interests, friendships, life skills, further education, and possible paths into work start to take more space.

Your child may want help building independence, speaking up for themselves, or working out what they want to do after school. Coaches and mentors bring experience in independence and self-advocacy, career counsellors can help them explore their options, and mental health professionals can support their wellbeing as things change.

6

Adulthood

Higher education, work, everyday independence, and long-term wellbeing

Adulthood brings more choices, responsibilities, and decisions for your child to make for themselves. Work, further education, relationships, interests, home, money, and everyday responsibilities may all become part of the picture. So do bigger decisions about what they want and where they want support.

The right people around them help with finding meaningful work, navigating college or the workplace, living more independently, looking after their mental wellbeing, and working through new challenges as they build the life they want to live.

Every journey is easier with the right people beside you

Every stage brings new discoveries, new questions, and new possibilities.

Through these stages, your child, too, is coming into their own. They are discovering interests, engaging with the world in new ways, building relationships, learning, and growing into a life that feels truly theirs.

There is a community that understands the road you’re on. People who’ve spent years building the knowledge and experience that can help along the way.

Speshul brings them to you, so you can move forward with more support, more clarity, and more confidence in what comes next. That’s the hope behind Speshul: a wider world of knowledge, experience, and approaches, and an easier way to find the right person for your child at the right time.
